Biju Festival

A colourful 3-day festival that marks the dawn of a new year for the Chakma community in Tripura.

Biju Festival, celebrated over three days, has its roots in the Chakma community's agricultural heritage. It originally served as a way to seek blessings for a prosperous harvest season. Today, it has evolved into a cultural celebration, showcasing the rich cultural diversity of not only the Chakma community but also seven other ethnic groups in Tripura: Marma, Tangchangya, Tripuris, Mro, Khumi, Khiyang, and Chak. Each of these communities adds its own unique touch to the festivities, making Biju a wonderful mosaic of traditions and cultures.

The historical significance of Biju Festival is deeply intertwined with the agrarian traditions of the Chakma community. It was originally held to seek blessings for a fruitful harvest season, making it a vital part of the agricultural calendar. Over time, it has also become a platform to preserve and promote the cultural heritage of the Chakma people, ensuring that their traditions and way of life are passed down to future generations.
