One of the earliest examples of rock-cut structures

Among the Satmala ranges of the Western Ghats in Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar lies a complex of caves going back back to the 2nd century B.C., which is amongst the earliest examples of rock-cut structures in India.

Pitalkhora Caves are a scenic network of 14 Buddhist caves from the Hinayana period recognised for having no representations of a human Buddha, along with singular statues of Yaksha figures, soldiers, elephants, a deteriorated Gaja Lakshmi icon and an ancient rain harvesting system of rainwater.
