Mandore

The first capital of Jodhpur

Across the sun-drenched Thar Desert, where the sands whisper tales of ancient kingdoms, lies the storied city of Mandore – a living chronicle etched into the very fabric of Rajasthan's layered inheritance.

Set around 15 kilometres from Jodhpur, it was where Rao Jodha, the chief of the Rathore clan, used to live. When he set up Jodhpur in 1459, this city served as its capital. However, as the imposing structure of Mehrangarh Fortress rose to dominate the horizon, concerns for its security prompted the abandonment of Mandore, leaving behind a trove of design marvels.
