Among the busy urban centre of Chennai, the Cholamandal Artists' Rural settlement stands as a true layered collection of art and heritage. Begun in 1966 by a visionary group of 38 artists from the Government School of Arts and Crafts, this charming commune has blossomed into a vibrant people of the area of creativity, boasting houses, studios, galleries, a theatre, workshops, and more, collectively owned and managed by its members. The Cholamandal Artists' Rural settlement has not only achieved self-sufficiency but has too gained renown for hosting exhibitions in leading Indian towns, leaving an indelible mark on the illustrious 'Madras Movement' in South Indian art.

Set approximately 9 km from the scenic Adyar part of the country of Chennai, the Cholamandal Artists' Rural settlement proudly stands as India's largest self-supporting artists' rural settlement and one of Asia's most triumphant artistic endeavours. Within its bounds, one finds a spectrum of artistic facilities, including the esteemed open-air theatre, Bharathi, serving as a space for stimulating discussions and conferences.
