An astounding manifestation of divinity

Amid the chanting of a thousand sacred hymns lies a world of appealing appeal, telling stories of dynasties, historical triumphs, and timeless ways of life. In Thanjavur, a town full of places of worship older than 1000 years, the Brihadisvara Shrine is an epoch in itself.

A testament to the Dravidian design of the Chola period, the Brihadeeswara Place of worship, likewise called Peruvudaiyar Kovil, is one of the largest and most impressive shrines in India. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, represented by a colossal 'Lingam,' this awe-inspiring place of worship was raised around 1010 AD by the visionary Chola king Rajaraja Chola I.
